A JEWELLERY shop in Bude is backing a national awareness campaign to help find a cure for brain tumours.

Three Bees of Bude has signed up to support the Brain Tumour Research charity’s Wear a Hat day, which takes place on March 29. It’s the UK’s premier brain tumour awareness event and has raised over a million pounds since the charity was launched ten years ago.

Adele West, a jeweller expanding into millinery, who owns Three Bees of Bude, will host a fashion show to showcase her bespoke hat designs, with all proceeds going towards Brain Tumour Research.

There are very personal reasons for Adele’s fundraiser, as she lost her dad to a brain tumour in March 2018. Paul West, from Paignton, died just six months after his diagnosis with a glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) — a highly aggressive type of tumour — aged 78.

Adele said: “With Wear A Hat Day just around the corner, I thought a fashion show would be the perfect way to showcase my latest hat designs while also fundraising in dad’s memory. All the hats and headwear are made out of traditional felt material and I’m grateful for 12 volunteers from the local community, who have agreed to model the items on the night. I’m also thankful for the volunteers who are lending a hand on the night.

“The event takes place on Saturday, April 6, at 7.30pm and will be held at the Parkhouse Centre in Bude. Tickets cost £5.

“After losing my dad, I became shocked by how many people have been affected by this devastating disease. My friend also lost her husband to a brain tumour and I am determined to do all I can to raise awareness.”

Amy White, community fundraising manager in the South West, said: “It’s touching that Adele is so committed to fundraising in her dad’s memory and to support those who have been affected by a brain tumour.

“Sadly, Paul’s story reminds us that less than 20% of those diagnosed with a brain tumour survive beyond five years. We cannot allow this desperate situation to continue. We are thankful for Adele’s support and we hope that she inspires others to take part in Wear A Hat Day.”

Wear A Hat Day has raised over a million pounds since Brain Tumour Research was launched ten years ago and is the culmination of Brain Tumour Awareness Month in March. To get involved with Wear A Hat Day, please visit www.wearahatday.org or text HAT to 70660 to donate £5.
