SOME members of the ‘Refugees Welcome in Bude’ group have organised a shoe-box scheme with a difference - to add to the work they have already been doing to aid the ongoing refugee crisis.

Instead of obtaining a shoe-box and filling it yourself, they are asking for empty shoe-boxes and any of the following items: candles, gloves, socks, woolen hats/beanies, toothpaste and toothbrushes, soap, shower gel, shampoo, small tins or packets of food, water bottles, packets of UHT milk, pens, paper, first aid items and messages of hope and goodwill.

Items can be dropped off at 86 Victoria Road, Bude, 47 Lynstone Road, Bude, or the Ark Angel bookshop, also in Bude, by 11am this Saturday, November 21 at the latest.

Group member Mary Whibley said: “Filling a shoe-box yourself can be expensive but by organising the scheme this way people can help with very little cost.”

Once all the items are in, two members of the group will then take everything to a church in Truro, which has arranged to fill all the boxes and take them to Europe in time for Christmas.

The ‘Refugees Welcome in Bude’ group is part of a movement in towns and cities throughout Great Britain making preparations for the resettlement of refugees.

Last month all the estate agents in Bude agreed to inform their private landlords about how they can register to let their properties to refugees.
