LIBERAL Democrat councillors from Launceston have uncovered plans by Royal Mail to close Launceston Post Office and move it to a new base outside the town centre.
They are concerned at the lack of public consultation and that the likely new location is all but inaccessible to pedestrians.
Until a year ago, Launceston had two Post Offices — in the town centre and at Newport. In addition, there were numerous Post Office services in the villages around the town. Since the last round of closures, the people of Launceston have had to rely on the main town Post Office and part time or home services in some villages.
"I have learned that the Royal Mail are planning to close Launceston's Post Office," said Alex Folkes, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Launceston Central. "I am told that they have been unable to find a permanent postmaster who can make a profit. I understand that they have considered other locations in the town centre but have been unable to find anyone to take the business on.
"The current thinking is that the Post Office will move to the empty Newport Grill building. Royal Mail say that they have secured parking and that the building is accessible to disabled people. However I also understand that another location in the Newport area is also under consideration. It seems amazing that just a year after closing Newport Post Office they are planning to move back to that area."
In response to the claims, a Royal Mail spokesman told the 'Post': "We are committed to maintaining a Post Office service in Launceston and are doing everything within our power to secure a permanent solution for the town.
"A temporary Subpostmaster has been operating Launceston Post Office for the last three years but has recently been given notice to quit the premises by the landlord. We have held discussions with a number of prospective partners and called a meeting with local representatives of the council to enlist their help. We have fully explored all the suggestions and contacts put forward by councillors following the meeting of the full town council. We are happy to investigate any further practical suggestions offered by the councillor.
"As with all such changes to the Post Office network we will enter a formal period of public consultation when firm proposals are in place."
Mayor of Launceston, Cllr Paul O'Brien said: "The entire town council is both shocked and dismayed at the news of the likely closure of the Post Office. We're aware of efforts to ensure a replacement is opened but it should be in the town centre. That's the heart of the town and the post office should be part of it."
