THERE was a wonderfully festive atmosphere in Launceston on Friday evening for the late night shopping event.
Many of the town’s shops and cafés stayed open until late, ensuring people were able to stock up on Christmas presents for friends and family.
The event was started by a procession through the town, led by shire horses and donkeys, children from Windmill Academy carrying lanterns, Launceston College Samba Band and a host of decorated Minis.
The town square came alive with people, young and old, who gathered to enjoy the various fairground rides, bouncy castle, bucking reindeer and snow machine.
Magic Martin patrolled the town, bringing his unique form of entertainment, while a barbershop quartet, Launceston Town Band and Launceston PopChoir provided the music.
Youngsters were able to visit Santa in his grotto in the Market House Arcade.
It was also the launch of the Christmas tree festival in St Mary’s Church, which was very well attended.
In addition, a craft fair was held in the former tax office on Madford Lane.
The late night shopping event followed the successful Christmas lights switch on and the ‘food and rink’ weekend.
But that isn’t the end of the town’s Christmas festivities. This Saturday, there will be a Christmas market in the Square and on December 17, everyone is welcome to attend the carols in the square event.
There will be free parking in the multi-storey car park on Saturday, December 12 and 19.
Sue Isslieb, vice-chair of Launceston Chamber of Commerce, said: “The chamber is especially pleased that people are taking part in the events.
“We’ve had a very successful run. The town should be amazingly proud.”
