RESULTS were revealed as to who had been recognised in the ‘Queen’s New Year’s Honours List’ on Friday, December 30, at 10.30pm, writes Helen Pusey.
Sheila Perry, of Wadebridge, was one of five people from Cornwall to learn she had received the British Empire Medal for services to World War II heritage.
Sheila, commanding officer and curator of the ‘Cornwall at War’ museum said: “My husband and I met 40 years ago almost to the day when this was announced and nearly 100 years ago that my grandad died in the First World War in the Royal Navy. I just could not believe it when I opened the letter.”
Husband and curator Steve Perry was full of pride as he stood by his wife’s side and said: “I am very proud of my wife’s BEM and feel it is richly deserved.”
Sheila, although very proud, quickly added that she felt she was a tiny cog in a big wheel as many generous volunteers at the museum give their time, skill and expertise freely, which has gone on to create this fascinating tri-service museum.
She said two long serving and dedicated supporters, Stan Liddington volunteer from Wadebridge and procurement officer Frank Volante, of Camborne, passed away at the end of last year and would not have known the news and be sadly missed.
Without such commitment this rather impressive museum might not have developed into its current grand scale with its many artefacts.
At present volunteers continue fitting out the new aircraft and vehicle hangar, which was built in 2016 and was opened by wing commander Bazalgette, station commander at RAF St Mawgan on June 26.
This recent award can only enhance the museum as a whole and reinforce its strong links with the schools, cadet forces, other youth organisations and serving military personnel who all take advantage of what the museum has to offer.
