A THEFT of wheels from a sight screen occurred at Lifton Cricket Club over the weekend (June 5/6).
Member of the club, Tim Sutton-Woodhouse, told the 'Post' that the theft was not of great value in terms of finance, however it was important to the club as it had been completed voluntarily by members at the end of April beginning of May, in time for this season.
The parts for the screen had been found and donated by many and the sight screen had been made for £142; a huge comparison to around £1,500, the average price of a commercial sight screen.
The ride-on lawn mower tractor wheels had been donated by a horticultural equipment company and these will now have to be replaced.
The main gate to the club was padlocked and according to Tim, pliers had probably been used to remove the wheels.
Tim said: "The club does not have a lot of money for new equipment and the old equipment is looked after well. It is sheer vandalism."
The club and village has experienced a number of incidents over the years. Tim said that a few months ago someone drove around the pitch and left track marks, as well as another incident when flood lights were stolen.
Tim commented: "I am disappointed and cross. The hard work was put in on behalf of others, particularly the youngsters. I am a great believer of investment for the future."
If anyone has any information regarding this incident please contact police on 08452 777444 quoting log reference number JT10586.
