‘THE Great Cormac Roundabout’, or the roundabout at Hillhead Junction in Bude, is now, according to Google, a historic landmark, after what is thought to be a prank has got local people smiling.
The roundabout at Hillhead Junction, on Stratton Road in Bude, has been causing havoc for people in the community for months, and has already been custom to some pranks in the not-so-distant past.
With people complaining that the work has gone on for too long, and often having trouble getting to and from work or dropping the kids off to school, it is an understatement to say that a prankster’s recent joke has got local people talking.
A local man posted a picture on Bude Banter, a community Facebook page, claiming that he was waiting for the AA and that his location was reportedly at ‘the Great Cormac Roundabout’.
Comments ensued, and someone posted ‘screenshots’ of the online page, which also said that the destination is a ‘historic landmark’.
This is not the first prank the roundabout has endured, as Christmas time saw some skeleton mannequins dotted around the site, dressed in workers’ jackets — as if they were working on the roundabout.
With construction having started in October 2016, Cornwall Council previously told the Post that work is expected to be complete in spring.
A spokesperson for the council previously said: “Whilst every endeavour is being made to restrict the use of temporary traffic lights, there are times when three-way traffic lights have to be in place for 24 hours a day for lengthy periods, in order to protect workers from traffic and members of the public from any exposed or incomplete works.
“The council recognises that this will cause delays to the travelling public, but it is necessary in order to enable completion of this major junction improvement. Endeavours to reduce the travel delays for certain key periods or when other highway work is required in the area, have meant that the works will take slightly longer. It is expected that the scheme will be completed in spring, 2017.”
A Bude lady, Di Garrett, claimed that it was in fact her husband, Richard, who had pulled the humorous prank.
She said: “We were gobsmacked when it got through Google scrutiny and actually appeared as the roundabout’s name — not only on their maps, but also AA maps.”
Di and Richard live on the A39 at Stratton, and explained that ‘having a sense of humour about the roundabout is our way of getting through all the disruption that is causes’.
