WHEN the steam railway in Launceston re-opens for the new season on March, Friday 25, passengers will be able to experience one of Launceston Heritage Railway’s best-kept secrets.
Many may not realise that they are travelling on rails that originated from one of the most secret underground railways in the UK.
While the line was closed during the winter months an extensive partial track relaying programme was completed.
To undertake the task the management team had to create some unique new tools to help complete the operation of implementing new ‘sleepers’, ‘shoes’ and steel rails.
The ‘Underground Secret Railway Project’ was one of many created at strategic UK locations since 1900 for the safe and secure storing of materials and equipment for all the military services.
Some of the hidden, underground, rural sites have now become obsolete and have been dismantled or ‘mothballed’ as a result.
Launceston Steam Railway managing director Nigel Bowman realised the opportunity and significance of bringing some national history to the heritage railway tourist project, which would have otherwise been forever lost.
With the Victorian and Edwardian rolling stock once again in pristine condition, the steam railway will be ready to receive local people, railway enthusiasts and visitors in 2016 — with special offers to be made available soon.
The arrival this year of more ‘heritage’ exhibits has also encouraged the creation of a second museum for additional memorabilia. This is nearing completion and will adjoin the station terminus.
There is free entry included with a ticket or family pass.
