A LUCKY pupil from Warbstow Primary School was thrilled to have the letter he sent to Hollywood signed by Tom Cruise and returned to him.

In the summer term, Oscar Gough and his fellow pupils had a visit and talk from Paramount Pictures’ Helen Moss, whose nephew Ben Northcott is in Year 3 at Warbstow.

As part of their literacy work, the pupils wrote letters, which were sent off to Helen to thank her for her visit and talk. Oscar’s letter included a bit about his favourite film, Top Gun, and his favourite character, Maverick, portrayed by Tom Cruise.

After receiving the letters, Helen had lunch with the actor in Los Angeles, and showed him Oscar’s letter, which Tom signed and Helen sent back to Warbstow.

Head of school Stuart Ellis said: “I had asked Helen to come in and promote target setting and high aspirations within the school. I wanted to promote that a young woman from local routes has made it to one of the top 20 women in the film industry.

“As part of a thank you, the Year 2 teacher Mrs Provis asked the pupils to write handwritten letters as part of their literacy.

“It just so happened then Helen was having lunch with Tom Cruise in LA, told him about her visit to Cornwall and produced Oscar Gough’s letter, and said would he sign it, and he said yes.

“We received a letter back from Helen from Paramount Studios, within that was a signed letter for Oscar. He was thrilled — it was lovely.”
