ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD Bude boy Saul Barraclough (right) has unicycled his way to raising £550 for local charities.
In June ReFILL Bude started a Crowdfunder to raise £3,500 to install a modern refill station in the centre of Bude.
Saul thought this was a great idea and wanted to do something to help, so he started his own JustGiving sponsorship challenge hoping to contribute.
Only six weeks after teaching himself to ride a unicycle, he challenged himself to complete the 5km Tamar Lakes Parkrun on it.
A regular participant in the Tamar Lakes Parkrun, which takes place every Saturday at 9am, on Saturday, July 14 at 8am Saul began the tricky 5km ride around Tamar Lakes on his unicycle completing the ride in 40 minutes. Not only did he ride the course, he then stayed on until 9am and ran it with the other parkrunners!
Saul raised a massive £550 for his efforts. ReFILL by then had already managed to meet its target of £3,500 so Saul donated his funds to two of his favourite things. He gave £300 to the charity Friends of Bude Sea Pool (FoBSP) as he spends many happy hours in Bude Sea Pool with his friends and family and the rest went to Bude Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) Nippers.
The aim of Nippers is to learn and gain confidence in the sea but the main emphasis is on having fun in a safe beach environment. Fundraising is used to purchase specialist equipment tailored for Nippers to use in training and competition.
Well done Saul!
