ST Breward residents were again out revelling to almost a full church on its patron saint’s day celebrating St Branwalader.
The traditional annual revel service, involving four village organisations with their individual entertainment style to fit within the hour’s service, was held on a Sunday afternoon.
Organised by the Rev Canon Sherry Bryan, it saw the blessing of the traditional revel buns made this year by Margaret Overton to a ‘secret’ recipe.?
Taking part were St Breward Silver Band, St Breward Guides and Brownies, St Breward Handbell Ringers, and the St Breward WI.
The Guides and Brownies gave an illustrated Postman Pat’s History of Birthday Cards.
This was immediately followed by St Breward Handbell Ringers, who introduced the congregation to the St Branwalader — a disguised Peter Glaser — who then in turn introduced many of the local Saints from the neighbouring village churches and chapels, culminating with a ‘discovery’ of handbells and a rendition of ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’.
St Breward WI provided a comical sketch written by member Christine Woolf, called ‘The Book Club’, including somewhat obscure references to a number of well known authors and their best sellers.
The entertainment was rounded off by a first performance of St Breward Silver Band’s version of ‘You Raise Me Up’.
A collection was taken to be divided between the band and church.
The service concluded with a full tea provided free by the ladies of the church and served in the village hall.
