A village Methodist church, which has served its community for 116 years, is to close its doors at the end of August.

Tetcott Chapel has provided a place of worship for the community, and countless number of baptisms and weddings have been held there since it was founded in 1899 as a Bible Christian Church.

Tetcott was part of the Holsworthy Bible Christian Circuit, which later became the Holsworthy United Methodist Circuit when the Bible Christians united with Holsworthy Methodist group.

There are 21 chapels, including Tetcott, within the Bude and Holsworthy Methodist Circuit. Fortnightly services at the chapel will cease from the end of August, but a final date has yet to be confirmed.

Bude and Holsworthy Methodist Circuit Superintendent Minister the Rev John Henry will hold his last service at Tetcott on June 28 before he moves to Teeside at the end of the summer.

He said the closure was 'very sad': "The numbers have dwindled and it's not viable anymore. As time progresses the needs of the church changes, a lot of these country chapels were built when people used to go on foot before motor vehicles and now the needs in the community have changed."
