HOLSWORTHY Golf Club Veterans turned out in force to contest the Jim Bearham Trophy stableford competition with all but the last few competitors having dry conditions overhead and course-wise.
That said the final foursome did have the outright winner as once again Trevor Hayne showed a clean pair of heels beating wind, heavy rain and all the other players, his 42 points going him top placing.
George Booth headed Division I with 41 points following on in the minor placings then came Brian Axford 40, Ken McGeorge 40 and Tony Houghton 39. Division II leader was the aforesaid Trevor Hayne with Tony Tomassi, the veterans' captain, second, one point behind, with 38 point totals by Ben Tole and Albert Taylor. Pauline Bezzant with a creditable 37 points was the leading lady
The aptly named Windwhistle Golf Club in Somerset staged the ladies' South West Rally with the competitors having to contend with near gale force winds and to most of the two Holsworthy teams a course new to them.
However, they battled on resourcefully to take the top two placings with Barbara Abrams, Julie Ellis and Betty Byrnes better ball score of 79 points being seven ahead of Pauline Bezzant, Ruth Bennett and Carole Baker in second place. One high spot was for Ruth Bennett when her drive on a par four finished in the rough, her second to the green going into the hole for five points.
The lady veterans following on from the chaps copped for the wind and rain almost from start to finish yet completed the flag competition set by Eileen Pearce bedraggled though they were.
The winning trio comprised Lesley Richardson, Caroline Pirie and Sue Epton nett 62 with in the runners-up position Ruth Bennett, Gwen Adams and Veronica Oke 67.
