AS WE go through life we become aware that 'rules are made to be broken', and this is obviously the case for South West Water as they now seem intent on going against all the planning guidelines that they previously set themselves for the siting of sewage treatment plants.

Nowadays we all expect the need for specialist sewage treatment but surely a single site just to serve the needs of Boscastle would make more sense economically and environmentally than the costs of installing and running a joint scheme wherever it may be: Black Barn or Bossiney.

Water bills will rise year on year as the running costs of pumping stations etc increase. This may not affect the residents of the village at the moment, but what about the future generations? Will they be able to afford to live here? Or will Boscastle turn into yet another coastal ghost town?

As it has been pointed out in your previous letters, the National Trust own the majority of land surrounding Boscastle and as they have done a fairly good job of defacing the lower village already, would a sewage treatment plant in the corner of one of their many fields make any difference? A site to serve the needs of its own village. Not too much to ask, is it?

It has also been pointed out already that the Black Barn on the proposed site is an eyesore. I agree. But it was probably erected before planning consent was needed. There's one thing for certain, no way would you ever get any permission to build such a shed there nowadays. Planners would say "it's a blot on the landscape", so how on earth can a major sewage plant be allowed to be built in the same field and surrounded with a seven foot high metal and barbed wire fence? It would look like a prison camp and visible from miles around. A real tourist attraction! I think not.

If the application does get approval, I hope that each time any of the small band of people (who will remain nameless, but are instrumental in pushing Boscastle's problems this way) do drive pass the proposed site, that their conscience is pricked and the hairs on the back of their neck stand on end.

As it says in the Bible 'love thy neighbour', and hopefully we at Trevalga will always be on hand to help our friends in Boscastle with any problems you have. But you have a major problem, so you should see a specialist. In your case, it's the National Trust!

I'm sorry to say, it's probable a few Boscastle residents won't be receiving a Christmas card from me this year.

Life long Trevalga resident,

Boscastle.
