ON a fine, but chilly autumnal afternoon, children as young as five-years-old recently gathered at Otterham Primary School from other local schools, to try out their rugby skills.

Schools from Boscastle, St Teath, Tintagel, Delabole and the host, Otterham, were in attendance so the children got a taste of rugby skills.

The 50 children thoroughly enjoyed being put through their paces to learn many new skills. They were taught how best to pass and hold a rugby ball, and to use their hands as targets when receiving a pass.

Through a number of different learning drills, with the help of Otterham Primary School PE teacher, Nic Osborne, these young children were able to progress rapidly during the one and a half hour session.

Many were able to demonstrate that they could pass with some degree of accuracy whilst standing still and even while on the move.

The variety of different drills gave all who attended the opportunity to enjoy rugby.

A spokesman said: “The main aim of the day was just that, so all returned to their respective schools with a smile on their faces, and hopefully on to become the future of this beautiful game.”

Shortly after, on October 13, the Key Stage 2 pupils from these cluster schools gathered at Otterham for their afternoon of rugby.
