THE next steps towards the restoration of a parish council where there are no councillors has been laid out.

Tintagel Parish Council has been without representatives after the closure of a visitor centre under its ownership proved the catalyst for a bitter row between campaigners who wish to see it retained and the now-former councillors who later resigned.

A statement on behalf of the authority stated: “Tintagel Parish Council currently has no standing Councillors in place and no staff in place. This means that the Council’s functions are temporarily reduced to a minimum, including the closing of the public toilets and suspension of parking permit processing. Cornwall Association of Local Councils and Cornwall Council are working to assist Tintagel Parish Council to rebuild.

“Four independent people will be appointed by Cornwall Council to hold the temporary office of councillor until January 29. These independent people have not sat on the council previously and do not seek to do so at the byelection.

“The temporary council will meet to pass resolutions on important administrative items, which includes authorisation to pursue recruitment of a new clerk and to make payments to clear outstanding invoices. They will not discuss matters relating to council policy or strategy; it is a temporary administrative function only.

“Cornwall Association of Local Councils will provide admin support for the temporary council and initially for the new council after January 29.

“Recruitment for a clerk will begin as soon as the temporary Council authorises this. The organisation structure, and subsequent recruiting of additional staff, will be a matter for the new council and new clerk to work through in the future.

“Decisions and actions on council functions, policy and strategy will follow once new councillors and a new clerk are both in place. This is likely to be around March to April 2026.”
