Launceston Rotary Club recently awarded £500 to the HFT’s Chy-Keres Respite Centre. The organisation is a National Group but the whole of this award will be ring-fenced for the local branch use only. Rotarians visited the respite centre and were very impressed by the care and attention given to their patients, who were being looked after and cared for by a dedicated team of staff so that parents and caring relatives could enjoy some respite from what is often a full time job.

l Cream teas made by a member of staff at Chy-Keres in Tregadillet were available at their event on October 18 to commemorate their tenth year as a provider of respite care for families of adults with learning disabilities.

They opened in October 2005, with their official opening being conducted by Princess Anne and actor Martin Clunes in the spring of 2006.

Cornwall Council saw a need for a service that provides respite for those who take care of adults with learning disabilities full time so HFT created Chy-Keres.

HFT, the charitable trust, support those with learning difficulties to become more included in their communities, achieve their aspiration, build confidence and offer support to help them plan and achieve in the future.

Chy-Keres supports around 50 people throughout a year with stays varying from one night a week, a weekend break or longer if the parents or carers are taking a holiday.

The staff decided they would like to organise an event to mark their tenth anniversary, to which they invited the people they support and their family members.

Cream teas were available to buy at £2, and had been baked by a member of staff, and there was a raffle to which local businesses donated.

The staff at Chy-Keres hope that through events like this they will be able to raise enough funds to turn one of their existing rooms into a new sensory room.
