IT seems as though rock fever has hit Launceston!
‘School of Rock’ launched at McQueen’s Dance and Theatre School CIC on Saturday, January 25 — a joint programme run by local musician Martyn Callwood and Mark and Rachel Oles from McQueen’s.
More than 100 children made their way through the doors at McQueen’s studio, where they were able to sample a range of instruments on offer and explore how to perform on stage.
School of Rock founder, Martyn, said: “I was hoping that were would be a good turnout, but I could never have expected the amount of kids and parents we saw over the course of the day. I was absolutely blown away with the amount of interest this received from excited kids and very intrigued parents that seemed to love the idea.
“Kids were invited to come in and have a look around and try out some instruments — and my word did they do just that! The venue was pumping all day. It was great to see so many kids picking up something they’ve never tried before and getting a feel for it with giant smiles on their faces. Nobody seemed shy to just make some noise, which is what the open day was all about.
“All of the parents that I spoke to seemed really excited about the School of Rock’s unique concept and we had an amazing amount of positive feedback, and it was great to see a lot of my private students turn up with their very supportive parents.”
Martyn added: “I want to thank a few people which helped make the day possible — obviously Rachel and Mark at McQueen’s, Darren May, Ross Morris, Harry Jeffery and my son Alfie Callwood. I’m grateful to all for your help and support to make this happen!”
Rachel Oles from McQueens Dance and Theatre School CIC added: “We had such a great day which was busy from 10am and we didn’t have a lull until 3.30pm. Much fun was had by all who came along and lots of people signed up for the classes which will start on February 8.
“The aim is to get all the classes working on the same songs in their sessions and then we’ll bring them together for rehearsals to bring all those sounds together and then perform for audiences. Our family festival in August will host their first public performance!”
Instrument lessons for the School of Rock will start on Saturday, February 8.
