WITH the October school half term on the horizon, the RNLI is calling on anyone planning to visit the southwest to keep themselves and their families safe by visiting lifeguarded beaches.

RNLI lifeguards will be providing safety cover on Praa Sands, Sennen, Porthmeor, Gwithian, Porthtowan, Perranporth, Polzeath and Widemouth in Cornwall, plus Croyde, Woolacombe, and Bantham in Devon from Saturday, October 24 until Sunday, November 1 during the school half term.

At Fistral Beach in Newquay RNLI lifeguards are on the beaches daily until the end of October and will continue to provide voluntary weekend patrols until the end of November.

At Summerleaze in Bude, RNLI lifeguards will run voluntary patrols with help from members of Bude Surf Lifesaving Club throughout half term.

RNLI Senior Lifeguard Manager, Steve Instance, said: “It is great that we have been able to extend the lifeguard season into October on a selection of beaches to provide safety cover for those looking to prolong the summer season or enjoy some autumn surf.

“Over the half term, we would really encourage anyone visiting the coast to head to one of the beaches where the charity’s lifeguards we will be on hand to offer advice and keep people safe.

“When visiting any beach it is essential that people are aware of the dangers and know how to look after themselves in the water to prevent incidents. However the sea can be unpredictable, so if something does go wrong, our lifeguards can provide a rapid response.

“Those who can’t make it to a lifeguarded beach can help keep themselves safe by taking note of the safety signage at the entrance to the beach, going with a friend or telling someone on the shore where they are going, at the same time always being aware of the conditions and their own capabilities in the water. Those who enjoy walking and exploring the coastline should also check the local tide times.”

When the clocks go back on Sunday, the RNLI lifeguard operational hours will be 10am-5pm for the half term week.
