AFTER 27 years of trading in Holsworthy, John and Jacky Allen finally closed the doors of their cookware shop in Fore Street on October 6, and retired, writes Christine Williams.
It was in 1987 that they began trading in Gimletts Court. Then, two years later, they took over two shops, which they joined together under the name ‘Southbourne Catering’.
Looking back over the years, John and Jacky said they had enjoyed serving their customers, many of whom have become their friends.
Apart from being a businessman John has been mayor of Holsworthy seven times, a district councillor for seven years and a town councillor for 20 years. He is chair of the Holsworthy Hospital League of Friends, chair of the Ruby Country Partnership and organiser of the Ruby Run. He is also a trustee of the Holsworthy Community Property Trust and keeps a watchful eye on the Holsworthy Visitor Information Centre.
He intends to continue this involvement in the community. Even so, he is looking forward to having more time for Jacky and him to make more visits to family and friends in Spain.
Liz Wedgwood of Rectory Cottage Cakes has moved from a unit in the Market Arcade into one half of the Southbourne Catering premises.
