ONE man and his kayak from Holsworthy went on an adventure off the coast of Cornwall recently and was surprised to find his journey interrupted by a Giant Bluefin Tuna.

Rupert Kirkwood, a retired farm vet from Holsworthy, is an experienced kayaker and can often be spotted paddling out to sea.

He has previously spotted sea creatures such as common dolphin, basking sharks and even a Fin Whale, all from his small, rather un-protective, kayak.

On his most recent voyage Rupert (pictured below) said his kayaking companion, Jeremy, ‘was looking in exactly the right direction when a Tuna the size of a dolphin jumped clean out of the water’.

He noted that their excitement, along with fellow kayaker Jane who was also on the trip, began to grow when the ‘intensity of activity seemed to build’.

After a few minutes Rupert soon had his camera at the ready and managed to catch a few ‘snaps’ of the leaping fish — a lucky sight that not many people will have chance to see.
