WITH the festive season almost upon us, residents are being reminded of changes to waste and recycling collections over the Christmas period.
In Cornwall, as in previous years, there will be no waste and recycling collections on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.
Collections due on Christmas Day:
• Rubbish due to be collected on Christmas Day will be collected on Tuesday, January 1;
• Recycling due to be collected on Christmas Day will be collected on Saturday, December 22;
• Garden waste due to be collected on Christmas Day will be collected on Saturday, December 22.
Collections due on Boxing Day:
• Rubbish due to be collected on Boxing Day will be collected on Wednesday, January 2.
• Recycling due to be collected on Boxing Day will be collected on Saturday, December 29.
• Garden waste due to be collected on Boxing Day will be collected on Saturday, December 29.
For collections due on any other day of the week over the Christmas period, Cornwall Council will collect waste and recycling as usual.
With the exception of Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, household waste recycling centres are open seven days a week between 9am and 4pm.
Residents of Torridge are being encouraged to continue recycling over Christmas.
There will be no collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day, but crews will be working on the other days across the holiday period to collect any festive leftovers — with a few collection days being altered to fit around the holidays.
Residents should note however, there will be no garden waste (green wheelie bin) collections between Monday, December 17, and Friday, January 11. Collections will restart on the normal day from January 11.
Residents are being reminded that many of their festive items can be fully recycled, including: Plastic bottles and containers, glass bottles and jars, and tins (in the green box); Christmas cards (in the brown bags); Christmas card envelopes (in the green bags); Food waste, including turkey bones (to go in the green food caddies); Cardboard (broken up or flattened) must be placed in the brown bags.
There are some items which unfortunately cannot be recycled: Large oversized boxes may be rejected unless broken in to pieces and placed in the brown bags or alternatively these can be taken to one of the local recycling centres; Items covered in glitter cannot unfortunately be recycled.
This also applies to wrapping paper covered in glitter and metallic or plastic coated wrapping paper. Any non recyclable items need to go in the refuse black bags.
