RESIDENTS have spoken of their delight after a public right of way in Launceston has been opened.
For many years the land owners had installed a large lock onto the gateway to help protect livestock, meaning less able bodied residents were unable to use the public path.
But now, after working for over 18 months, the right of way, located directed opposite the end of Carbooth Lane in Launceston, has been opened via an old inaccessible stile.
Cornwall Councillor for Launceston Central, Gemma Massey, has worked with various officers within Cornwall Council, together with the Duchy (land owners) to come to a resolution to the problem and last week the lock was removed and the gateway opened again so local residents can use the public right of way.
Launceston resident, Mandy Watson said: “Would like to say a huge thank you to councillor Gemma Massey for her tireless work in making the public footpath at Lower Chapel more accessible for the less-abled.”
Of course, as with all walk ways, dogs are requested to be kept on a lead in case live stock are grazing in the area.
Cllr Massey told the Post: “Every now and then, councillor case work throws a curve ball. After 18 months of battles, we have success. A public right of way is now finally opened to all residents and I am so thrilled it has been enjoyed by local dog walkers already!
“I am glad both the council and the duchy have been able to come to a resolution to ensure this right of way is accessible to all residents who wish to use it.”
