MULTIPLE rescue teams were called into action to rescue two people stuck on the cliffs near Upton.

Crews from Bude Coastguard Rescue team were joined by Boscastle Coastguard Team alongside Rescue 924, the coastguard rescue helicopter based in Newquay and RNLI teams from Bude and Padstow lifeboat stations to the incident, which occurred during the evening of Saturday, August 23.

One was rescued by crews using rope while the other was winched to safety by the helicopter crew.

A spokesperson for Bude Coastguard Rescue Team said: “Bude Coastguard Rescue Team was paged at 21:07 to a report of two persons stuck on the cliffs near Upton. Boscastle Coastguard Team was also tasked to provide personnel back-up for a potential rope rescue. Meanwhile, Rescue 924, the Coastguard rescue helicopter based in Newquay, was scrambled, along with Bude RNLI Lifeboat and Padstow Lifeboat, to provide seaward cover.

“On arrival, the team quickly identified the location of the two casualties. This was followed by a highly technical, challenging, and precise operation between the helicopter and the Coastguard Rescue Teams to recover them from their dangerous position.

“One casualty was recovered via rope rescue, and the other was winched to safety by the helicopter crew. This was an excellent example of effective teamwork in an unpredictable and demanding situation. Our thanks go to the crew of Rescue 924 and to our Boscastle colleagues for their critical assistance.”

Sharing the news ahead of the Lifeboat Day in Bude, the coastguard team added: “We would also like to pay tribute to our RNLI colleagues, who provided safety cover and essential illumination of the scene, especially during the period when the helicopter had to return to Newquay to refuel as the rescue effort continued. It is our privilege to work so closely with them on such a regular basis.”
