A LAUNCESTON councillor is urging people to report any crime to the police.

The comments of Liberal Democrat Cornwall Councillor for Launceston South Jade Farrington came at a town council meeting last week after a number of cars had their windows smashed in the town — on Dunheved Road, at The Walk, and Castle Street car park.

Overnight (February 15 to 16) a number of vehicles were broken into in Launceston.

Cllr Farrington told town councillors at their meeting last Tuesday: “You probably will be aware of the very disappointing events last night.

“A lot of property has been recovered. Police are appealing to anyone who hasn’t reported it to do so.”

Cllr Farrington said this would help police ‘paint a picture’ of how many cars were broken into and help them ‘return property’.

She added: “People need to report. Time and time again people complain we are losing resources. Of course we are losing resources when people aren’t reporting crime.

“Some crimes won’t get investigated but if they aren’t even logged it looks like Launceston doesn’t have crime and we lose more police.”

Cllr Farrington said anyone wishing to report crime, as well as using the 101 non-emergency number, can also email [email protected], and she said police would contact the sender.

Reporting on the incidents on Launceston Police’s Facebook page, Sgt Aaron Ward said it was thanks to a ‘vigilant member of the public’ who ‘trusted their gut feeling’ to call the police, that two men were arrested, and a ‘significant’ amount of property recovered.

He added of the person who reported the incidents: “This is a great example of a community not only looking out for others but also taking positive action.

“Launceston is a safe town and suffers from a low crime rate compared to other towns. However, we must not become complacent and give the opportunist a reason to target our property.

“Please can we ask that as a result of this incident that we all take a look at our home security and ensure that no valuables are left within our cars.

“Local officers strive to make our town as safe as possible but we cannot do it without your help and continued support.”
