MEMBERS of the Launceston branch of the Royal British Legion were joined by mayor Brian Hogan and councillors at the war memorial in the Square, on Saturday where a short service of remembrance was held at 11am on VJ Day.

The Rev Mary Williamson led prayers, following the two-minute silence signalled by Ann Brown playing the ‘Last Post’. Wreaths were then laid on the memorial in tribute to the sacrifice made in the Burma Campaign in World War Two by so many of the 14th Army — often referred to as ‘The Forgotten Army’.

A barbecue followed at the RBL headquarters, attended by branch and women’s section members, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the end of the war.
