WITH pupil numbers in the school at an all-time record, St Joseph’s Senior School Prize Giving was held in a prestigious new venue for this event, St Mellion International Resort.

It proved to be a popular choice as more than 400 pupils, parents, teachers, governors and guests were able to view work from Art, Textiles and DT, enjoy the music and drama and celebrate all the prize winners on their achievements.

Mrs Warren, chair of governors, spoke of her pride in her role and of the work and support she receives from every member of the ‘team’ that make up the school. This was followed by a recital of If, by Rudyard Kipling, thought provoking and applicable to children and adults alike.

Headteacher Oliver Scott addressed the whole school community, reflecting on his first year as head and the need to focus on making the very best of today, to make the most of all opportunities life presents in uncertain times. He also praised the many achievements of pupils in many different areas, and the importance of focusing on each child as an individual.

A presentation was made to Year 11 pupils of handmade personalised glassware from renowned local artist Jo Downs as the school said an emotional goodbye to their graduating class of 2016 before they take the next step in their educational journey.

The retiring Head Boy Celyn Ensell Bowen and Head Girl Laura Sant gave an impressive and confident speech outlining the many events and achievements that have taken place over the past year, and wished the new Head Boy and Girl every success.

The Wind Band performed a medley from Jesus Christ Superstar with passion and gusto which was followed by the Girls’ Chamber Choir’s rendition of Cantate Domino, a popular choice with the Year 11 girls who had performed this in their first Year 7 concert. The Brass Ensemble performed My Way with much feeling and Mrs Mann paid credit to them as this was their last performance together before moving on to other schools and colleges.

As this was Mrs Mann’s 30th and final Prize Giving, she particularly wanted Canzonetta to sing The Water of Tyne, which they did, excellently, giving her a wonderful memory to take away. The classic Monty Python sketch Four Old Men, performed by Rohan Sturdy, James Walters, Isaac Abideen and Zac Clifford-Flower was a humorous sketch acted with perfect timing.

Mary Martin and Jake Winmill thanked Miss Walker and Mrs Warren for their contributions to the evening before handing over to Mr Scott for the unenviable task of thanking Mr and Mrs Mann. When he had delivered his speech thanking her for her 28 years’ service to the school Mrs Mann was received with a standing ovation. She then spoke movingly of the importance of high expectations, of never giving up, of being the very best you can be.

The evening closed with a rousing rendition of We Are the Champions from the forthcoming production of Schools We Will Rock You, tickets for which are available from St Joseph’s School.
