Opting for washable nappies, rather than disposable nappies, could help families beat the credit crunch, according to Adam Symons, Lead Member for Health and Waste at Torridge District Council.

Cllr Symons was speaking as he and his wife, who is due to have their first child in April, were being shown the range of different washable nappy options available to parents by Amanda Wycherly, the 'Real Nappies Coordinator' for Torridge.

Cllr Symons said: "My wife and I want to use washable nappies. I know, as an environmental scientist, that used properly, washable nappies are better for the environment. Perhaps a greater incentive in the days of a credit crunch induced recession is that they cost less than disposable nappies. Parents can save at least £500 by using them, and even more if you can get them from a friend who has used them previously."

The cost of using disposables can be as much as £1,000 over the life of a child. Real nappies vary widely in their cost depending on the style chosen, but Cllr Symons said: "You can buy all the nappies, waterproof covers and fastenings required for two and a half years on the high street for just under £50. More stylish nappies cost more, but most parents could save lots. A perfect recipe for the credit crunch."

Local mum Nicola Hallman's 18 month old son Zach uses real nappies, as did his older brother Finn. Nicola said, "We've saved hundreds of pounds over the years using real nappies but not only that, they are better for the environment."

Nicola will be assisting Real Nappies Coordinator Amanda Wycherly during Real Nappy Week from Monday. Amanda will be holding a series of awareness and practical events throughout the district and has a range of demonstration nappies that she is happy to show people.

Amanda will be at Holsworthy on May 1 at 1pm.
