WELLIES and walking sticks were the order of the day when members of the Bude Group of Cornwall Wildlife Trust (CWT) visited the reserve at Greenamoor, Week St Mary recently.
This is a culm grassland site that has been in CWT ownership for about 20 years. Walk leader, Peter Kent, the east Cornwall conservation manager, explained that culm grassland is a rare habitat in Cornwall these days so this reserve is special.
Culm grassland is a kind of wet heathland that overlies the poor draining broken rock of North Cornwall and West Devon. The result is a very tussocky terrain and hidden wet hollows. The area has reduced by about 80 per cent in the past 100 years. The unusual habitat means that there are special plants and insects that can be found.
