A RANGER is busy fundraising to enable her to travel to Kenya next year to teach English and Maths to African pupils and help construct a toilet block for their school.
Tregadillett Ranger Lauren Hicks, 15, has organised several events to help with the cost of the trip and said she would appreciate any help from members of the public who can support events or donate raffle prizes.
Lauren said: “Over my ten years of being in the association, I’ve been offered many opportunities, like travelling to Switzerland and helping the community.
Last June after attending an interview process at our regional meeting, I was offered the chance to be part of the group travelling to Kenya in 2018. The trip includes teaching English and Maths to African pupils, devising lessons to make learning fun, as well as constructing a toilet block for their school.
“For me, this is a fantastic opportunity and I cannot wait, I was thrilled to be chosen as I’m the only person attending from the South West out of the 16 girls selected from around the country. We each have to fill a suitcase with various items to take for the children in the community. We have held one camp out and have another one planned later in the year in Bath to get to know each other and to learn more about the trip.
“As you can imagine the cost of the trip is quite high, so I have organised a few events such as a Big Breakfast this Saturday at Tregadillett hall, a High Tea in July and a Wine and Wisdom in October. Several companies have generously donated raffle prizes.
“I would appreciate any help, this could be from turning up to any fundraising events to support me, or to donating any raffle prizes.”
If anyone would like to help Lauren or find out more information about the upcoming events, contact her mother Helen on 07800 785412.
