Fundraising in Lewannick has paid off to install a defibrillator in a telephone box.
With the support of local people, local businesses large and small and Cornwall Councillor Vivian Hall, sufficient funds have been raised to buy a defibrillator from the Community Heartbeat Trust.
The remainder of the money raised is held by the CHT for future maintenance of the unit.
The defibrillator has been installed in the recently adopted telephone box next to the village shop.
The telephone box is now owned by the parish council and has been renovated to its former glory, all the paint supplied by 'The British Coatings Federation', ensuring they ended up with the right 'phone box red'!
The defibrillator is considered to be a vital piece of potential lifesaving equipment and when used with basic CPR can increase the chances of surviving a 'Sudden Cardiac Event'.
The defibrillator does not require a person to be trained as the unit provides visual and audio prompts.
If you come across a person suffering from a SCE the advice is always call for an ambulance, which will give you the lock code, and do not be afraid to use the defibrillator with CPR — it might make a difference.
The neighbouring village of Polyphant has recently had its own defibrillator installed outside the village shop '3 Cows on't Green'.
