THE flag of St Piran was raised at Launceston Castle on Friday to acknowledge the news Cornwall had been granted national minority status — but a town councillor wants to see the historic banner given a permanent fixture in the ancient capital. Cllr Rob Tremain was delighted to hear the news that the Cornish people had been granted national minority status, and wants to see the patron saint of tin miners' flag take pride of place in Launceston — the 'Gateway to Cornwall'. He presented a St Piran's flag to English Heritage upon completing 25 years as Launceston's town crier, to be flown from the castle on 'high days and holidays' — including events significant to the town such as the carnival and the Charles Causley Festival. But to see the flag — since replaced by one provided by a local businessman — hoisted there permanently would have given him and the town a greater sense of pride, he said.
