ON Saturday, May 18, Liskeard Model Society members presented a cheque for £1,000 to the volunteers who run the RAF Davidstow Memorial Museum.
A quarter scale model of a Spitfire, built by the Liskeard Model Society members in 1999/2000, is permanently displayed at the entrance to the museum, and many models made by David Brown of the Liskeard Model Society, representing 100 years of the RAF, are displayed within.
The Liskeard Model Society has sadly had to dissolve due to loss of members and difficulties in recruiting. Therefore, the members decided to distribute the society’s funds, gained over its 30 odd years of existence, to the benefit of various organisations. Mainly raised through exhibitions and offering train rides at the Morval Rally in Looe, the society has donated funds to Ellie’s Haven, Children’s Hospice South West, the Shuttleworth Vintage Aircraft Collection and RAF Davidstow Memorial Museum.
The Spitfire, displayed at the museum, is a quarter scale exact replica of a Spitfire that crashed near Liskeard during the Second World War, and was built at the Millennium Club project in 1999/2000.
Two years ago, the museum agreed to house the model, which had been stored in various sheds and garages for several years. The museum constructed a purpose built house for the model, which has pride of place at the entrance.
Also housed at the museum are a large number of model aircraft built by David Brown for a long time member of the society. These models represent 100 years of the RAF.
