THE town of Holsworthy is looking forward to celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee later this year, with plans in motion for a week-long celebration.
Holsworthy Town Council have been working with a number of local organisations to discuss and put into action plans for a town-wide celebration of the once in a lifetime Queen’s Platinum Jubilee to be held this year between Thursday, June 2, to Sunday, June 5, inclusive.
The council is very grateful to those local organisations and groups who have already agreed to get involved to put together a proposed programme of events (to date) as follows:
On Thursday, June 2, at 1pm, the Town Crier will announce the Proclamation. A ‘Civic Service of Celebration’ is also planned, time to be confirmed. From 8pm a ‘Lantern Parade’ will be led by pupils from the local schools and the college with a piper playing the official Queens Jubilee tune. Music will be provided by the Town Band and at 9.15pm the lighting of the beacon on St Peter’s & St Paul’s Church tower will take place followed at 9.45pm by choir singing of the Platinum Jubilee song ‘A Life Lived with Grace’.
On Friday, June 3, there will be a display of photographs, memorabilia of the past 70 years, and previous Jubilees and the winner of best dressed window/business competition will be announced.
For the weekend celebrations, on Saturday, June 4, a hobby horse Derby is planned with children/parents races in the park (coordinated by the Scouts, Holsworthy Area Sports Pavilion, schools and the college).
And rounding off the festivities on Sunday, June 5, a ‘Big Jubilee Street Party’ in Fore Street is to be organised by the town council.
Also as a permanent record of the celebrations St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church are looking at creating a ‘Jubilee Path’ in the churchyard with fruit trees along the path to the wildlife area and memorial bench, and other organisation such as the Rotary Club and town council are seeking ideas and suggestions for other areas which could incorporate some permanent celebration planting.
A spokesperson added: “The town council and the other organisations who are taking the lead on the Queens Platinum Jubilee celebrations are hoping that the whole town and those of all ages will be able to take part and enjoy the extended holiday to recognise the 70 years of dedicated service by the Queen to the United Kingdom and Commonwealth.”
