The largest herd of dairy cows to be sold in the UK this year took place at Holsworthy Livestock Market on Monday — marking the end of an era for a Holsworthy farmer and his family.
Buyers travelled from as far as Wales, the West Midlands and parts of the South of England, for the sale, which is understood to be the largest of its kind in the country this year.
The dispersal sale of Holstein Friesians on behalf of the Graham family of Thorne Farm, Pancrasweek, saw more than 1,000 head of stock sold over two days at Holsworthy.
All the cattle were transported to the auction site before for preparation where they were washed, clipped and fed.
The Graythorne herd commenced in 1950 with Mr Graham (senior) establishing the herd in Berkshire before moving to Thorne in the late 1990s. His son, Steve continued the business and has been involved since he was 15. Now, Steve plans to see the world and do other things 'before he is too old'.
