FORTY six members of the public attended a meeting of Pyworthy Parish Council on Friday night to air their views on the possible use of the former Highways Depot at Derriton, near Holsworthy as a travellers site.

Torridge District Council recently acquired the former Devon County Council Highways Depot in Derriton as a possible authorised and managed permanent gypsy and traveller residential site.

At Friday's meeting the views expressed concentrated on the unsuitability of this site for travellers, including its proximity to the River Deer, lack of street lighting, lack of school facilities and also the nearby Woodland Trust's Martyn's Wood.

Two people also gave their vivid experiences of living in the vicinity of travellers' sites in other parts of the country.

An Action Group has been formed by concerned local residents.
