Former Launceston College student Emily Cowling, held The Polar Express Pyjama Party in Launceston Town Hall on December 21.

Sixty people turned out for the event, raising a total of £520 as they sat and enjoyed the classic Christmas film.

The 17-year-old was inspired after she completed the National Citizen Service programme in the summer, where she learnt of an opportunity to volunteer in Ghana at a local school.

Emily explained: “There were two roles available: teaching and multi-sports or building and renovation. I have taken the opportunity to complete the role of teaching and multi sports as it’s something I have always been interested in so it seemed a perfect opportunity to explore an interest. What a better way than in Africa!

“For me the trip is more about learning new things and opening myself up to experiences, new cultures and developing my teaching skills for back here in the UK.”

To be able to go on the trip Emily needs to raise a total of £1,795 by the first of March, which is why she decided to plan something a little bit different.

Emily said: “I wanted to do something that I hadn’t seen before in my local area, so that it would draw people in and ultimately help to raise the funds I needed, plus a little extra for supplies that will be left as a donation.

“The event was really successful and we have plans to do it again in 2019 due to the responses of those who participated. With a special thanks to Chris Brown for providing popcorn and candy floss.

“I still need to raise more to reach my final instalment of £800 but I’m so nearly there”.

Emily has planned a golf day at Launceston Golf Club in February, to help reach her target.
