IT is ‘evident’ speeding outside a village primary school needs to be addressed, says North Cornwall’s MP.
Conservative Scott Mann, on a visit to Werrington Primary School last week, said he would follow up with Cornwall Council to find out what traffic calming measures could be implemented there.
Werrington School is situated adjacent to a 30mph road.
Louise Hussey, assistant head at the Federation of North Petherwin and Werrington schools, told the Post that last term a collision saw part of the wall outside the school damaged.
She said: “Fortunately it happened after school. The staff were quite shaken up. They had to bring the driver in and look after him before the police arrived.
“He went over the pavement outside school and knocked over part of the wall. Luckily it was not at drop-off or pick-up time.”
Ms Hussey’s class the ‘Dragonflies’ carried out a speedwatch outside school last term.
She added: “Every car that went through was speeding — most 37mph plus. It’s an obvious issue.
“We had identified it as a bit of an issue as we are a Healthy School anyway, and we have a travel plan.”
The pupils then wrote to Mr Mann to ask for his help in reducing speeding outside the school. They were then sent to Mr Mann over the summer.
Ms Hussey added: “They were rather thrilled when it worked. It was a really lovely visit and the children had a great time asking questions.”
Following his visit to the school, Mr Mann told the Post: “It was great to meet with children and staff at Werrington Primary. We held a question and answer session and the children asked lots of interesting questions, which was great fun.
“I was then shown by staff how the road outside the school is posing a risk because of the high speed that cars are travelling along it.
“I received a pile of letters from the children about this issue before my visit, and it was evident that the road outside the school needs addressing.
“I will be writing to Cornwall Council about this to see if traffic calming measures can be implemented to ensure the safety of children, parents, staff and fellow road users.”
The Liberal Democrat Cornwall Councillor for the area, Adam Paynter, said the issue had been looked at ‘over the years’.
“I have done quite a lot of work on this stretch of road over the years, including getting a 30mph limit at Ladycross.
“I have also asked for it to be a 20mph zone as it is outside a school. I have used a Speed Visor regularly to monitor actual speed and have worked with the police, who have also done speed checks. I also had signs placed on the corner to warn motorists.
“I am still pushing for 20mph zones outside all schools but this will take a while.”
