PUPILS at St Breward Primary School performed in concert alongside other schools recently.
On Tuesday, October 16, a concert at Sir James Smith School was held to raise money for Save the Children. The event was organised by the Camelford and District Save the Children group — the longest running local group in the south west. It was founded by the late Biddy Holden of Delabole in the 1950s. They are a small group of eight people who run a few small events each year and have raised more than £30,000 in the last ten years.
A spokesperson said: “One of the annual events run by our group for a great many years has been a concert with the Washaway West Gallery Choir, in St Teath church, every Autumn. Every year we choose a theme, often a literary one celebrating a centenary or anniversary of a great writer such as Thomas Hardy or Lewis Carol.
“A few years ago we invited Otterham Primary school to take part in the concert by performing a musical number related to the theme. The school was really enthusiastic, the concert was very successful, and subsequently St Teath Primary School also got involved.”
The group thought the children were ‘so brilliant’ that they deserved their own performance event and so the concert held at Sir James Smiths was organised.
It was decided that the theme should reflect the vital work being addressed in schools on raising awareness of ‘mental health and emotional resilience in children and young people’, therefore the children from St Breward primary sang a joint song ‘This is Me’ from the musical The Greatest Showman with Otterham Primary School. They also entertained the crowds with a well choreographed Bokwa dance.
Katie-Jane Goodman, nursery and Reception teacher at St Breward Primary School, said: “The event was a huge success, it was wonderful to work with all the schools. We are thoroughly proud of all the children, they were fantastic in their performances.”
The spokesperson for Save the Children added: “We are grateful to the schools for their wonderful enthusiasm. We hope that it will lead to an even bigger event in 2019, the centenary of the founding of Save the Children.”
