CAMELFORD was filled with festive cheer on Saturday night, as large numbers of residents and visitors gathered in the town to see the Christmas lights switched on.

The procession started at Camelford Hall, where everyone was given a glow stick by Camelford Town Council, before moving off down Fore Street.

Led by members of Camelford Town Band, the group stopped off to sing three carols along the way.

Town councillor, Kirsty Ferguson, who is part of the council’s events group, said: “We were really worried at the end of the senior citizens’ meal as the weather was really bad, but we decided to carry on and we’re glad we did. The wind and rain stopped for us. A huge amount of people turned out. It was wonderful.”

The lights were switched on by Camelford resident Francis Bennett along with the town’s carnival royalty.

As the countdown rung out, at 7.30pm, a fireworks display began, set off from a field in College Road. Many congregated in Churchfield Car Park to get a good view.

Students from Sir James Smith’s Community School brought along their Green Power car and Santa arrived by pony and trap and later met children at the Masons’ grotto.

A record number of children met Santa this year, keeping him busy for more than two hours.

Santa will return to Camelford in the run up to Christmas, visiting various areas and estates (see posters in the town for dates and times).

Cllr Ferguson added: “The lights look lovely. It’s really nice to see that the town and all its residents get together for the Christmas lights.”

The town council will be hosting a Christmas cake stall outside the park on December 18.
