The availability, or rather the lack of availability, of public transport to residents of Kensey Valley Meadow in Launceston was highlighted by Cllr Jess Williams at the recent meeting of the town council.

Cllr Williams referred to the recent Launceston Community Network Panel meeting, at which public transport in the town was raised. Someone attending the meeting brought up the issue of public transport on the estate.

Cllr Williams said she had been looking to gather evidence to take the issue further, and has delivered leaflets to residents, but unfortunately she did not receive many responses.

She did hear a number of personal accounts from people that are unable to access public transport.

“It was very moving and very interesting in how to understand people’s real life experiences of living in this town without public transport.”

Cllr Williams said she would be happy to send an email on the feedback received.

Mayor, Cllr Margaret Young, felt that all estates in the town were fairly accessible, and she told councillors she regularly travels on the town bus with her grandson, but it doesn’t seem to be very full. She added: “Anything that helps transport in the town is worth pursuing.”

Cllr John Conway said: “Public transport is a problem. If you can get something done, brilliant.”

He noted that one problem with Kensey Valley Meadow is that it is on a hill, and the footpath to Newport has been blocked, and needs re-instating, so that people could walk to the Co-op at Newport.

“We need to not let that matter die,” he added.

Cllr Young suggested that Cllr Williams liaise with the bus company, with any evidence that can be collated.
