THE founder of the Robert Johns Leukaemia Fund has been able to present a cheque for £4,000 to the children’s oncology unit at Derriford Hospital, thanks to continued support at fundraising events.
The charity, set up by Bob Johns in memory of his son, Robert William Johns, who lost his life to leukaemia in 1983, is on a mission to raise as much money as possible to support people living with the disease and to provide funding for lifesaving research into the cancer.
On Tuesday, May 28, Bob travelled to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth to deliver a cheque for £4,000 to the children’s oncology unit. He also sent a cheque for £2,500 to the Royal Marsden Hospital towards research into leukaemia.
This year alone, the charity has raised over £7,000 through a variety of fundraising events, including a fantastic evening in Launceston Town Hall, with performances from Johnny Cowling, Twin Harmony and The Countrymen. The concert raised £1,842 altogether.
Bob told the Post: “They have really supported us. The twins produced a CD for us, which raised about £8,000.
“I’d like to thank everyone, especially those three, for their support. It’s all ongoing and that helps.”
Next up for the charity, they will be welcoming the Mousehole choir to Bude on July 6 for a special fundraising concert.
Bob added: “You think you have lost part of the family, but we get the people who support us and they really want to help. I’d like to thank the twins, Johnny Cowling and The Countrymen for their continued support.”
