NEARLY 50 people, placards at the ready, turned up at the Triangle in Bude on Friday to protest for action against the climate crisis during the Global Climate Strike.
Organised by Year 11 Budehaven student Jess McKinnin, the strike saw in the region of 50 people turn out for the strike, which saw them march through the streets of Bude to draw attention to the current climate crisis and demanding action is taken.
The day was a huge success, with people carrying placards stating ‘There is no Planet B’ and ‘We’ll Do Our Maths When You Do Your Job’. The crowd was made up of people of all ages, from local school students to pensioners, all with the same aim — to spread awareness of the detrimental effects of climate change on the planet and to demand action against it.
Jess, a Year 11 student at Budehaven who organised the event, was delighted with the turnout. She told the Post: “It went really well — we had loads of support and lots of people came from outside the Bude area, from Launceston and Holsworthy. It was really good throughout the morning.
“When we had the previous strike, we really wanted to have a consistent presence and we wanted to be there to spread the message. This time it was more about including everyone in the community and we had a great community event. Everyone came together and formed a really nice group.”
This is the second strike organised by young people in Bude, with the first having been organised by North Cornwall Youth Parliament member Indigo Haynes.
Jess continued: “It was really a group effort in the end — that’s what made it all happen. We are planning to do more but we have no set dates just yet. We are thinking about getting involved in other ways, to ensure actual action is taking place.”
