A MAJOR project in North Cornwall is seeking people's help in researching the First World War service of men who fought in the conflict and of those who stayed at home and helped the war effort.

Camelford branch of the Royal British Legion was delighted to receive confirmation that the Lottery Heritage Fund agreed to its application for a grant to commemorate Camelford and Advent from 1914 to 1918, which gave the organisation the go-ahead to start researching.

In the 1911 census for the Camelford and Advent area there were approximately 390 households, which is about a fifth of the same area today.

About three years later war was declared and the men of Great Britain and the Empire were called to the Colours.

During the next four years around 250 men went from the Camelford and Advent area, and all but 24 returned.

Many of those who went were from the same family — in one family there were six men that faced the enemy and thankfully all six returned.

Camelford RBL's Cameron Valentine said: "Camelford has grown massively since 1918 so we want to include every family in Camelford irrespective of where their grandparents or great-grandparents were during the First World War."
