MEMBERS of the Dunheved Flower and Garden Group had a private visit to Bocombe Mill Cottage gardens, Parkham, near Bideford on Thursday, April 19.

This garden opens on behalf of National Garden Scheme charities a few times a year. It is a delightful garden with ponds, bog gardens and a stream through wooded areas, with several unusual species of trees.

A guided tour took the group through a kitchen garden and themed gardens, where magnolias and camellias were in flower. The natural, partly wild section is a haven for wildlife — goats graze on the hillside and the blossoms in the orchard are beginning to come to life. The walk is hilly in places and took about an hour.

Following this, the party enjoyed tea and homemade cake on the terrace. The owners, Mr Chris Butler and Mr David Burrows, were thanked for their hospitality.

In the morning, en route to Parkham, the group called at Merry Harriers Garden Centre at Woolsery for shopping and lunch. This is a favourite place with members and serves an excellent lunch, with efficient and friendly service. The weather was warm and everyone had a very pleasant day.

On Thursday, May 17, there is an outing by coach to Caerhayes Castle, Gorran.

Anyone interested in booking a place should contact Miss Vera Ellacott on 01566 776142, or for information regarding the group, phone Mrs Jackie Edwards on 01566 248 961. New members are always welcome.
