DUE to damage caused after heavy rainfall some of the classrooms at Holsworthy Primary School have been left out of commission.
The school has managed to arrange for some of their classes to instead be held in the youth centre nearby the school whilst repairs are being carried out to the roof.
The school closed over night and a team worked tirelessly to get the school prepared for the next day.
Headteacher of Holsworthy Primary School, Mr Tim Salvadori, said: “After we closed the school on Wednesday (June 15), after a night of heavy rainfall, we got in touch with the youth centre and Lyndon Piper and the trustees and they very kindly offered us space in the centre to hold some temporary classes.
“We are currently looking into solving the problems with the roof, which were the many cause of the rain getting in and causing water damage to several of our classrooms.
“We are hoping to get a new roof sorted by summer, but until then we are looking into a temporary repair.”
The community’s spirit really shone through as many came to the Holsworthy Primary Schools aid to help get them sorted before the next day of school lessons began.
Mr Salvadori said: “I want to express thanks, on behalf of the school, to the youth centre, and all those involved with it, for supplying us with space while we sort out the damage done by the flood water.
“I must thank Holsworthy Community College for sending over their caretakers, who did a great job in the clear up efforts from the damage caused by the rain water. It was very kind of the school to let us borrow their caretakers in this event.
“I also want to give an especially big thanks to all my staff here at the primary school for working tirelessly over night to ensure the school was prepared and ready for the next day. It really was a fantastic effort by all!”
For the time being Key Stage 1 lessons will be held in the space hat has been made available to them in the Holsworthy Youth Centre. It is hoped that normal school routine will commence as soon as the temporary repairs have been made.
l A number of properties were also assisted by the fire service after the heavy rainfall seen in Holsworthy and surrounding areas.
Fire crews were also in attendance at Clawton where the flood defences were overtopped. Fire crews and Environment Agency workers used sandbags to prevent homes from flooding or being evacuated.
There was major flooding near Holsworthy in a hamlet called Leacott, where three cottages experienced half-a-foot of water inside the properties, which were pumped out by fire crews.
The fire services were also called to a car stuck in floodwater on the A388 at 7.20am, but, as the caller confirmed, there was no one inside the vehicle — the crew then did not attend.
