HOLSWORTHY Golf Club Ladies played host to Thurlestone in the Sheelah Creasey county competition, captain, Yvonne Bowler, able to field a full team on this occasion with them ending up comfortable winners, 5 matches to 2.
The weather was warm and sunny unlike that for the away fixture when thick fog pervaded all day. Betty Byrne won 8 and 6, Yvonne Bowler won 4 and 2, Pauline Bezzant won 5 and 3, Sue Griffiths won 2 up, Freda Olde won 8 and 6 with losses by Barbara Lake 4 and 3 and Gwen Adams 2 and 1.
Carole Baker was a deserved winner of the July medal aptly named the Pretty Maid competition, her nett 70 giving her the trophy and a reduction in her handicap. Barbara Abrams, 74, took the runners-up spot with Carol Skrzypczak, 77, third.
Ely Walmsley had a good day playing in the County Silver meeting at Thurlestone, her gross 76 giving her third place. Quality not quantity again Ely.
The Lady Vets enjoyed their monthly competition but not the weather which curtailed the scheduled alliance with Glenys Mead, Juliet Hill, Gwen Adams and Jan Bostock, their 20 points total heading off the second placed quartet of Angela Barton, Yvonne Bowler, Eileen Pearce and Sandra Hawkett, 18 points.
The Mixed 'Woodchip' greensomes gave junior George Baker his first taste of adult competition as in tandem with father, Andrew, their 51 points was easily the best of the day. George was given special dispensation to take part, having to take a reduction in handicap from 54 to 36. Obviously one to watch for the future. Eric Lake and Ely Walmsley were second, 44 points, with Colin Walmsley and Sue Griffiths third. Carole Baker and Syd Pinder might have had the lowest score of the day, recognised by club professional Dan Wood who generously donated a free lesson but certainly benefited.
Although the weather was not conducive for playing golf the Veterans turned out in force for their July Medal with a masterly performance by the overall winner and topping Division I, back nine ensuring John Masters, 66, took first place with Des Best second also 66 and Bob Gelder third, 67. In Division II Ben Tole, Eddie Littlewood and Colin Gardner with scores of 75, 77 and 79 were first, second and third respectively.
The team had a very good win in overcoming visitors Trethorne by 5 matches to 2
although captain, Tony Tomassi and partner, Peter Hoyland, were beaten 2 down and John Faithful and Jim Bearham, too, lost by 3 and 2, the other pairings were successful, Alan Richardson and Alan Whittle by 3 and 2, Colin Walmsley and Syd Pearce by 2 and 1, a score matched by Eric Lake and Tony Downing with Brian Toop and John Plumstead 1 up, Bob Gelder and Roger Turner 2 up, having been 2 down with 4 to play. Good result, good company, good grub and a good day for all.
Good times, too, for juniors Ryan Acres and Ross Daniel both of whom continue to make progress with their golf with Ryan playing in the county junior competition played at Royal North Devon taking second place in the gross competition, with Ross being selected for Devon in the six counties event held at Woodbury. Ross, too, is involved alongside club profession Dan Wood as assistant coach with the juniors, with Julie Ellis taking on the roll of junior organiser, the position recently vacated by Andy Morris.
