FOLLOWING research carried out by the 'Post' into the history of the Holsworthy War Memorial, the Town Council will take over responsibility for the care of memorial.
Following public criticism of its condition on Remembrance Day last year, there have been conflicting claims as to who was responsible for it.
Research into the archives of 'The Post' revealed that it was erected in 1920 by the people of Holsworthy. For this reason, the Town Clerk, Mrs Clare Dalley, speaking at last Wednesday's meeting of the Town Council, said they should take over the task of caring for it.
A monumental mason had been asked to inspect it and had declared it was in excellent condition but it needed cleaning with a light chemical solution and the letters needed to be repainted.
Many people had offered to help, but Mrs Dalley thought it would be best done by a professional so the mason had been asked to provide an estimate. Cllr Richard Kennedy suggested an annual clean each year just before Remembrance Day and Cllr Brian Harris said, considering its age, 89 years, the people who had erected it deserved their thanks.
