BBC RADIO One breakfast presenter, Greg James, has introduced a new and exciting challenge this week — Pass the Pasty.

A Cornish pasty made in Padstow has been making its way across the country by different means of transport, to be delivered in Aberdeenshire, north-east Scotland, to a Radio One listener who has never had a traditional Cornish pasty!

Greg was gobsmacked when he learned that Sarah Walker from Newmachar in Aberdeenshire, had never tried a Cornish pasty before.

To complete the mission, which would see Sarah receive her first ever pasty by the end of the week, Greg had a helping hand from Danny, who made the pasty at Chough Bakery in Padstow on Monday morning, September 3.

Having made its first leg of the trip on the ferry from Padstow to Rock on Monday, the pasty was then collected and driven over the border into Devon for its second part of the journey, to continue towards the opposite end of the country.

Earlier in the week, Greg made 29-year-old Sarah swear the ‘pasty oath’ during an interview, before announcing that ‘world pasty champion 2018’ — aka, Danny from Padstow, head of the pasty production unit at Chough Bakery — had woken up extra early on Monday morning to make his finest Cornish pasty, which would later start its quest to be handed over to Sarah.

As part of the mission, Greg asked listeners to let him know if they could help transport the pasty across the country. It was reported that the pasty was delivered to Launceston Rugby Club on Monday morning after coming from Rock, with listeners in Bude being asked to help where they could.

People across the border in Holsworthy were also thought to have spotted the pasty as it made its way through Devon.

Sarah told the Post: “I can’t wait to receive my pasty and taste it — finally! I just hope it’s in as good condition and tastes as fresh as it does when it got made on Monday morning.”

The only concern surrounding the mission is if the pasty will still taste fresh when Sarah is finally able to taste it. All fingers and toes crossed here at the Post for the final outcome!

It’s expected the pasty will make its arrival in Aberdeenshire by the end of this week. Tune into BBC Radio One’s breakfast show every morning from 6.30am until 10am to follow the Pass the Pasty journey.
