AS a result of the administration of South Molton Recycling Ltd earlier this year Torridge District Council introduced its own in-house service — and it has received many positive customer comments already.

There have been fundamental changes in the process of collection, notably the reduction of kerbside sorting minimising the amount of debris escaping and being left at the roadside.

It is hoped that the new processes being introduced will be straightforward and householders will follow the simple steps to aid in the collection and sorting of recycling.

Householders will be ask to present their recycling before 7am on the day of collection. As before it will go into separate boxes and bags, these include: green box for cans, glass and plastic bottles; green bag for paper; brown bag for cardboard.

The process has caused some confusion with the public, however, as questions arose about the need to separate materials that will end up co-mingling in the same compartment of the recycle vehicle anyway.

The reason for separating recycling is twofold — it keeps the cardboard and paper materials dry and easier to process later on, but kerbside sorting may be introduced again at some point in the future and so for the time being the same methods of separation are being advised. The same types of materials previously collected should be put out for now but the council will continue to review additions to this growing list.
